Road Trip – Phoenix to Las Vegas in 3 Weeks

If you like hiking, camping, nice scenery, riding mules and the old west, then this is the trip for you!

This trip was VERY last minute. I planned and booked it in less than 2 weeks, which is why you’ll notice I’m driving back and forth a couple times before I get to Vegas. I had trouble booking the tour dates I wanted last minute. People usually have to book Grand Canyon tours 1 year in advance but if you’re travelling alone you have a good chance of finding a spot, which is the beauty of travelling alone.

This trip starts in Phoenix just before it gets really hot and humid.  It was only 44C (112F) and not humid at all. Vegas and Phoenix have similar temperatures. You’ll notice I booked places with pools and AC. Its cooler in Prescott, Sedona and the top of the Grand Canyon.  I actually felt chilled at night in Williams. As you hike into the canyon, you’ll notice the temperature increases. So bring LOTS of water, LOTS of salty snacks and hire a good guide.

Vegas may not be a place you want to be too long on your own, which is why I only stayed 2 nights. Having said that, I was lucky to meet up with an old friend and make a new friend so I could’ve stayed another 2 nights!  If you are on your own, there’s lot of shows, shopping or you can relax by the pool.  Pick a nice place on the strip so you have a nice pool!

The best time to do this trip would really be May. That’s when the kids are still in school and not all over the Grand Canyon. Whatever you do, don’t go to the canyon in July or August, which is monsoon season. This is when you’ll see flash floods in the canyon. The last big flash flood wiped out Supai Village with a 20′ wall of water.

I had a great time and met lots of nice people!

Enjoy!
